Optometrist in Walnut Creek CA
Glaucoma is a collective term for several different conditions which affect the optic nerve of the eye. Since glaucoma may show no obvious symptoms at all, it is important to come into our vision practice, Shigio Optometric Group, to see our
optometrist in Walnut Creek CA for an eye exam and glaucoma screening.
When you visit our vision practice for a complete eye exam, you will be seen by one of our expert eye doctors, either our optometrist in Walnut Creek CA, Dr. Ronald S. Shigio or Dr. Lauri K. Shigio. Glaucoma is a serious eye diseases which needs to be treated early in order to prevent any permanent vision loss. Glaucoma will cause optic nerve damage which cannot be corrected; treatment of glaucoma currently focuses on keeping the eye disease from advancing. Usually the optic nerve damage is caused by high pressure inside your eye, which is also referred to as intraocular pressure. At our vision practice, you can have an eye exam which includes measurement of this eye pressure. When it is found to be high, additional testing may be done to make sure that glaucoma is the accurate diagnosis. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness. It can be difficult to treat because it can cause vision problems that are so gradual, that patients may not even know that they have it until the eye disease is in an advanced stage. Primary open-angled glaucoma is the most common type of glaucoma; this eye disease has no symptoms in the early stages, but will eventually cause noticeable, gradual vision loss. When patients are diagnosed early with glaucoma, they can be treated by our eye doctors in a way that will prevent future optic nerve damage from occurring. This treatment will also limit any damage which may be caused by the glaucoma.
